You’re Not Alone in Feeling Lonely: Here’s What Helps

As a therapist who works with clients experiencing loneliness, I know it personally.


After the pandemic, I thought my social life would go back to normal. But the everyday interactions - grabbing coffee with coworkers, quick chats in the hallway - mostly didn't come back.


Many people tell me they feel the same way. But just knowing others are in the same boat doesn't make up for those missing connections.


So, last week I texted a friend: "Meet up?" 


We got together and talked about nothing important—just regular stuff. When leaving, he said, "Thanks for this. I didn’t realize how much I needed it." 


My hesitation to reach out? He’d felt the same.


The Loneliness-Solitude Divide


  • Loneliness is distress from unmet connection, even in crowds.

  • Solitude is chosen aloneness that renews energy.


One drains; the other sustains.


Why It Hurts


Loneliness isn’t just emotional. We identify prolonged isolation with:


  • Increased stress responses

  • Compromised immunity

  • Higher cardiovascular risks


Yet we avoid reaching out, fearing we’ll burden others. The paradox? Most people welcome connection.


Practical Steps Forward


  1. Reach out first - That friend you’re thinking of likely misses you, too.

  2. Walk together - Side-by-side movement eases conversation.

  3. Small kindnesses - A smile or thank-you bridges isolation.

  4. Reframe self-talk - Replace "Why am I lonely?" with "This is hard right now." Self-compassion helps.


The Reality


Loneliness lies, convincing us we’re uniquely isolated. Small steps—a text, a walk—can disrupt the cycle when we’d rather withdraw.


When loneliness makes you want to retreat, try leaning in instead—even just a little.
