You’re not alone.
Whether it’s public speaking, networking, or taking on new professional challenges, anxiety often keeps us from doing what we’re truly capable of.
In my own life, I struggled with anxiety—simple things like meeting new people or giving presentations would make my knees shake and my heart race. Fear took away my ability to showcase what I knew I was good at.
But here’s the good news: we can change how we respond to fear. The key is learning to name it and face it head-on.
Here are a few strategies to help you take control of anxiety:
Name the fear. Identifying what you’re avoiding helps you regain control. Saying it out loud or writing it down can diminish its hold on you.
Reframe your thoughts. Ask yourself: What’s the worst that could happen? How likely is that outcome? Can I handle it if it happens?
Ground yourself in the present. Use quick techniques like deep breathing or the 5-4-3-2-1 method to bring yourself back to the present moment.
Move your body. Even a short walk can help reduce stress and shift your perspective.
Practice self-compassion. Treat yourself with kindness—speak to yourself the way you would encourage a friend.
Take small steps. Gradual exposure to what scares you builds confidence.
Use relaxation techniques. Guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation, or listening to calming music can ease tension and regulate your nervous system.
I’m currently accepting new clients for online sessions at Inner Counsel Therapy.
