Taking the first step toward therapy can feel like a big decision, and it’s completely normal to have questions about what to expect. Your initial therapy consultation isn’t a full therapy session—it’s a relaxed conversation to explore whether you and I are a good fit to work together.

Here’s what you can expect when we meet at Inner Counsel Psychotherapy.

What Is an Initial Therapy Consultation?

This first meeting is an opportunity for us to connect and determine if my approach aligns with what you’re looking for in a therapist. You can ask me anything, and we’ll discuss what’s bringing you to therapy, what you hope to gain, and what support you need. Finding the right therapist is essential, and this conversation helps us assess if we’re the right match.

Opening up to someone new can feel strange at first. That’s completely normal. In fact, it’s one of the things that makes the therapeutic relationship unique—over time, that initial hesitation often transforms into a strong, trusting connection that supports your growth.

How to Prepare for Your First Therapy Consultation

  • Reflect on what’s bringing you to therapy and what you hope to achieve.

  • Consider any past experiences with therapy—what worked and what didn’t?

  • Think about any questions you have about the process, my approach, or therapy in general.

  • Find a quiet, comfortable space if we’re meeting online to ensure privacy.

What Happens in a First Consultation?

1. A Warm Welcome

Since I conduct sessions online, I take extra steps to ensure privacy and confidentiality using secure systems. My goal is to create a safe, relaxed space where you can feel at ease.

2. Getting to Know You

We’ll talk about what’s bringing you to therapy at this time. Have you worked with a therapist before? What approaches have been helpful—or not so helpful—for you in the past?

3. My Therapy Approach

I use an integrative, evidence-based approach that’s flexible and tailored to your needs. I typically suggest starting with four weekly sessions to build a strong foundation, but we’ll work together to determine what makes sense for you.

4. Exploring Fit

Therapy is most effective when there’s a good connection between you and your therapist. I’ll check in with you about how my approach feels: Does this sound like what you’re looking for? Do you feel comfortable with how I work?

5. Next Steps

If we both feel good about moving forward, we’ll book your first sessions. If you need time to reflect, that’s perfectly fine—there’s no pressure.

Why This Conversation Matters

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, but you don’t have to figure it all out at once. This initial conversation is simply about exploring your needs, answering your questions, and making sure you feel comfortable. By setting clear expectations and ensuring you feel heard, we lay the groundwork for meaningful progress, one step at a time.
